Gold Medal Graphics – Florence Re-Visited

Another hat-tip to the Times’ graphics department.

Who is the top country day-by-day? Well, on Days 7 & 9  Team GB clearly punched above their weight!

This slant on the traditional pie reminds me a lot of Florence Nightingale’s first use of this idea to show how Crimean War fatalities were so avoidable.

And as such it is of course superb.

The standard way, the Excel wizard way, of showing these kinds of series involves a staggered bar.

If you need to compare four groups of numbers, each with two or three subdivisions, then this way beats that hands down, and only takes an hour in Powerpoint too.
