70pc Of Human Behaviour Is Determined By Your Environment
... so how's yours?
I came across the stat of this post's title above from Owen Eastwood. A hugely in demand 'performance guru'. With record across sport, art and commerce non pareil.
The label Environment refers to pretty much everything that surrounds you. Physical, mental, social.
A key focus he promotes is belonging.
His stance is that if you seek to create the high-performance space and work backwards from what you think must be provided, you ultimately fail. You must instead first build up from the connections team members feel.
And how about this for an angle. When he got an instinct something about a particular team he'd just been shown around felt off, he asked the end-of-tour presenter this belter;
'He checked if he could ask a personal question of the presenter. She agreed and he asked if she had children. After nodding, he then asked if she would be happy for them to be part of the programme.'
The eventual, considered, red-line crossing answer was 'no'.
Other general red flags include when you constantly hear management say, "that's not good enough", those doing the work are not privy to any dialogue where they're asked for their reflections, and "You can’t call it a high-performance environment if you can’t put your hand up and say if you’re not clear on the gameplan".
I've been scarred by being in and around salesteams where all these danger signs and worse have been in abundance. Sadly not an uncommon occurrence in our sphere.
So again, is your environment one where the main thrust is providing a place where everyone can thrive?
If not, now you know getting to one all starts through the emotional energy fizzing by all involved connecting with each other and the defined purpose they rally behind.
