Manager Mastery Trio

Imagine a company that's interviewed 27 million workers.

What would be the three things they'd believe managers must master to be a good boss, and by association, a success all round?

Clarity, Communication, Accountability.

Harry Wallop entertainingly reported [sub'n req'd] that Gallup reckons that only one in ten workers is a naturally talented manager. Wow. But we already knew that, right?! To soften the blow, “Another two in ten people exhibit some characteristics of basic managerial talent and can function at a high level if their company invests in coaching and developmental plans for them”.

This may remind you of how far too many a salesteam defaults to simply promote its best performer.

Indeed, it does show an underpinning trident we ourselves can deploy to give the best chance of success. And to utter this at interview time could well be a winner.

I am though also minded to think about managers we try to sell to. Those we help buy from us are - if the stats are correct - in nine times out of ten potentially out their depth in their day job.

That's a staggering ratio.

So should we be able to promote this trio in our dealings with said potential customer we'd be doing both of us a big favour.

Definitions abound for them. Yet nuances don't stray too far from what you'd expect each to mean.

Seek to make how they talk about what they see as happening clear.

Push their thorough targeted adept constant purposeful comms.

Shape progress and problem-fixing for them both team-wide and individually responsibly accountable.

If you spot a gap in any of these on your current bids, now's the chance to allow for everyone to 'function at a higher level'.
