Privates Halfway Gateway

"Privates" is the insider term for private skills coach, from the world of professional football.

They are apparently becoming all the rage. With even major nation international players retaining their own. It seems like other sports that have them have seen such personal aides come out of the shadows. Notably basketball in America. And perhaps the oldest example of all, cricket. Where there's long been a tradition for a trusted source to be engaged - across all disciplines - outside of the typical on-hand provided team support structure.

In elite football's rarefied case, how can you not be surprised with the evolution that sees a veritable squad of them set up shop in Dubai, for their millionaire clientele to fly in when given a day off back home.

Good words spread through word of mouth. Training ground chatter among trusted team-mates.

Clubs aren't totally on board with this. Many in the parochial mindset of wishing to maintain control within their boundaries. Internal 'philosophy' sacrosanct (or should that be 'filosofie'?). Instances exist of injuries occurring through such 'unsanctioned' exertion (sometimes on sub-par terrain).

Yet players can lap it up when they feel their club cannot devote sufficient time individually, is without requisite expertise on a certain skillset, gives worries over management perceiving any deficiency as weakness. Or they themselves are happier to conduct learning with privacy.

A smattering of success stories seep through. Such as learning about fresh 'disguised run' goals of a leading forward. And it's not as if learning is kept hidden. For this week an England international winger admitted he felt he was 'rubbish at headers' so sought the advice of his prolific skipper, Harry Kane. With tips passed on openly lauded invaluable.

All this so closely mirrors Sales it's scary.

I know many a superstar that has (or had) an informal mentor. Too few salesteams have an adequate array of experienced talent on which to draw from the sidelines. Control freakery can sometimes tip into unwelcome dismissal of alternatives.

One aspect of today's 'privates' intriguing me is that I myself have performed this very role. The pleasure from seeing younger sellers make their name immense.

Many years ago, I recall a discussion about therapy among ladies. Some frustrated at lack of progress made. When one stood tall and suggested they were being taken for a ride. "True counselling is giving you freedom". Which she expanded as "by letting you go". As in, once you've got somewhere, keep on going, out the door and no need to keep paying. I adhere to this.

Another part of the problem is the ruin such service suffers at the hands of the universe of scammers in the online coaching industry. When I first started blogging, it was the IMers, the self-styled Internet Marketing expert, with their "frauducts" fleecing the unwary. Today, pick yer skill, and there's an online guru ready to part you from your money for precious little. Upfront fees and/or monthly subs in perpetuity, thank you very much. Down the drain.

Nowadays, the Sales ops department - where they even exist - seem less focused on skills and related selling betterment. Also, the days of having an enthusiastic imaginative encyclopaedic resource on hand - usually on retainer - are thin to disappeared. Which I find particularly distressing as other functions have such vital options. Even think on the extent of the Non-Exec Directors who Boards lean on.

If you've no such person on which to draw, then start with a small step. Providing you feel there's an element on which you want to get better, ask around. Anyone know someone renowned for that? You'll have a web around you larger than you think. Go ask.
