US Election Zoomscape Samples
Now it's over. Can the world breath again? Regardless of policy, passion or preference, at least we might all take something from these random six video call backdrops seen adopted as the '24 American campaign reached its climax.
One candidate on the unsuccessful ticket gave glimpse to their workspace.
Perhaps worryingly sparse. Hopefully not a metaphor. There's nothing wrong with the 'hostage video' background. But I often find myself suggesting how even a purpose-made flip-chart page with writing or diagrams sticky-tacked behind you can help no end.
Note how the webcam is above eyeline. Although the screen ought be raised in tandem, so participants don't see mostly your drooped eyelids. But let's start for now with a Half-Tick. The ringlight at slight angle, not totally head-on. More angled would be ideal, so again Half-Tick. And sitting in the corner spot would be best for personal projection. Potentially a Tick, but alas, No Tick there.
From at least 109 days farther back, here's a so-called 'expert' who maybe betrays all that's wrong with such talking heads. When previous economic predictions turn out so wildly incorrect, why do they keep getting asked for their future opinions?
Another quasi-hostage backdrop. With night-time daylighting not an issue screen-right. Although I couldn't help think where's the window blinds.
There's a degree of signalling going on here too. Although I'm not in the know, are those speakers saying something? Great eyeline here though.
In the immediate aftermath, this media owner relays his lengthy call with the winner in their early glow of victory.
Given this is someone whose day-job looks at on-screen image, this is perhaps a surprisingly display.
At least there's a touch of depth to what could be their home living quarters. Another decent eyeline. And that daylighting screen-right isn't too overpowering.
You might say being further away from that back wall or angling into a corner, if either possible, might elevate the vibe.
Time for a sleb. Among the slew of similar endorsement for the one team, this one though is remarkable for its supposed spontaneity. And wondering if the guy has ever been in front of a camera ever before.
Micheal Keaton - 2015 best actor Oscar no less - from, well, who knows where.
On a phone? Half in a hallway? Crouching down?
How very tiktok. A few years back.
Another American personality. A TV doctor, focused on psychology. Commenting here on how broadcast hysteria needed dialling back.
From her lounge you'd think. Always nice to see someone not centre-framing. That screen-left daylighting's helpful too.
A personal campaigner from home below.
More decent eyelining. Clearly happy to show vertical borders. We don't really need to do that. Nor show the keyboard, balcony or 'tree'.
But a reminder not to worry if you sport old-style headphones over in-ear buds.
