Zuck When Talking About Something Important
The latest in the recurring series of World's Richest Tech Bros change-the-world video monologues hit early this New Year.
Mark Zuckerberg spent 5 minutes 17 seconds justifying a sudden political volte-face. Worrying those forever inclined towards more regulation. Welcomed by free speech campaigners.
He began;
"Hey everyone. I want to talk about something important today because it's time to ... "
From the scenery you can see above.
First impressions?
Signature dark inky (oversized) t-shirt. Putinesque perma hand clasp on desk. SD card shape of dangling golden necklace trinket. What does a watch say about someone these days (especially one said to cost $900k)?
Is that an actual table? The sheened colour. The two coloured lines. Its edges.
The deliberate angle being sat at. That corner behind. Is that a twirled cable going up the wall? And what kind of shuttered bureau contraption is that angling across the rear?
A dozen items there that strike you for starters.
Maybe when you're worth two hundred billion you just press record and spout forth.
Then again...
The eyeline. Lighting. The almost everyman set curation.
It's difficult to praise this. Yet despite being unimaginative, forgettable, and even counterproductive, it does appear deliberately designed to not distract.
As I often bring relief to video callers, the hostage background of blank canvas can be fine.
In this case, it can also remind that the space between us and webcam can be put to use. Whilst empty here, there's space for papers, notes, props. No need to always crop us off as a bust.
Yes, this above is phone screen dimensions whereas we seldom if ever run a video call in such.
But even this gives insight into how we can best project ourselves.
And if you do choose or must use such an obscure, utilitarian, non-descript backdrop, this sample should give thought on how to make the most if it. You can even say, you're 'doing a Zuck'.
